Painted in 2008, 17 by 26 inches. Excluding my portrait of Jim and Maria (an overdue, already planned painting) this is the first original work in a few years. It shows a shift in style toward a moodier or more romantic atmosphere as well as a few changes in technique deriving, in particular, from a change preparing the ground with acrylic gesso to an oil-based primer which gives the painting a much smoother surface that absorbs a lot less of the paint's oil allowing greater luminosity and atmosphere. This painting is essentially a learning piece as the change in ground presented such a different surface that accepts paint so differently. I experienced a few clumsy moments but think, all in all, the painting turned out well.
